What are Polynucleotides, and why are they the trending aesthetic treatment for 2024?

Updated: May 15

Polynucleotides have been getting a lot of press over the last few months, featured notably on the popular UK breakfast channel This Morning.

They're a hot topic in the aesthetic world as they are an exciting breakthrough in regenerative aesthetic medicine.

Back in January this year, this morning did a segment on 'the weirdest beauty trends for 2024'. One topic covered was polynucleotides, aka 'the salmon sperm facial'.

Why are Polynucleotides called the 'salmon sperm facial'??

Polynucleotides are naturally occurring molecules that make up a significant part of our DNA.

The polynucleotide products you will find in aesthetic clinics come from salmon or trout in the form of highly purified DNA, extracted from the gonads.

And "trout sperm" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Benefits of polynucleotides

  • Polynucleotides are harnessed for their remarkable rejuvenating properties.

  • They are a natural substance which stimulates collagen production and helps repair skin cells, which as a result improves skin texture, reduced fine lines and wrinkles and the appearance of scars.

  • Inhibits melanin production, leaving an even and refreshed skin tone.

  • Anti-inflammatory properties makes it great for patients with rosacea.

  • The procedure is quick and requires minimal downtime.

Treatment Areas

As Polynucleotides are simply great for skin, the treatment can be used all over the body.

But our most commonly treated areas include around the eyes, the neck and chest and the face.

Polynucleotides also help a wide range of skin concerns, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Acne scarring, atrophic scars and stretch marks

  • Dark under eye circles

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Mild Rosacea

  • Skin laxity

  • Dehydrated skin

  • Poor tone and texture

  • Hair loss

How quickly do you see results from Polynucleotide treatments?

Results can be seen after just one treatment, but for maximal rejuvenation and the best results, a course of 3 treatments spread 2-3 weeks apart are recommended.

How long do the effects last?

Improvement in skin quality will then last for 9-12 months. with a top up treatment recommended to keep your new radiant skin.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects for Polynucleotide treatments can occur, but only generally at the site of the injection. You may experience redness, swelling or bruising.

More serious side effects, such as allergic reactions, are rare. And at Dr Knowles Aesthetic Clinic, you'll always undergo a pre-treatment consultation to mitigate and understand any treatments risks.

Where can I get Polynucleotide treatments?

Polynucleotides are not yet widely available and here at Dr Knowles Aesthetics we are proud to be offering this amazing treatment.
